Dental Careers
Description of program
Do you want to make a difference in the mouths of many? Start a career making beautiful smiles in the Dental Careers program. This program will give you the exposure you will need to pursue many high-demand dental careers.
What will I do in this program?
Work hands on to learn necessary skills to be able to work safely in a patient's mouth. During the first year you will learn:
- Chairside assisting
- Instrument transfer
- Infection control
- Sterilization and disinfection
- Mixing dental materials
- Oral health and nutrition
Some skills you will learn:
- Set up an operatory and prepare a patient for their dental procedure
- Mix dental impressions
- Teach an oral hygiene program to your patient
- Charting procedures
- Sterilize/disinfect instruments
- Help create and teach an oral hygiene program as a community service project

College credit and internship opportunities:
After completion of two semesters or three trimesters, you may qualify for:
- 8 college credits and advanced placement at Spokane Community College's Dental Assisting program.
- Program certificates in eight areas of instruction.
You will develop a portfolio and the knowledge you gain could be used for your senior project. Second year is a continuation of certificates as well as 3 additional college credits. It also includes building and improving on the skills and knowledge that you attained in the first year program through further instruction and work-based learning opportunities.
