Clinical & Scientific Investigation

Description of program

If you like detective work and hands-on science, this may be the program for you. C.S.I. Clinical and Scientific Investigation will give you the tools to pursue a career in investigative sciences and laboratory work. The students trained in this program can become the detectives of the health care world. Learn about diseases that threaten our communities, and how to investigate cures.

What will I do in this program?

You will work with life sciences and mathematics in a laboratory setting:

  • Learn the art of scientific investigation
  • Learn medical terminology
  • Practice laboratory safety procedures and infection control
  • Perform hands-on lab experiments involving forensics, genetics and blood analysis
  • Discover the fearsome fauna of the microbial world
  • Use epidemiology to discover disease outbreaks
  • Analyze DNA samples
  • Receive HIV/AIDS training
  • Tour local laboratory facilities

In addition, you will use:

  • Micro pipettes to prepare solutions, analyze samples and make controls.
  • Microscopes to view blood, identify parasites and bacteria, look for and identify cancer tissue samples.
  • Spectrophotometers and other lab equipment to analyze blood samples.

Laboratory skills are an important part of criminal investigation, diagnostic health care and product development.

Some skills you will learn:

  • Microscope use
  • Medical terminology
  • Infection control procedures
  • Phlebotomy procedures
  • Applied mathematics
  • Quality control protocols
  • Handling specimens
  • Legal and ethical responsibilities
  • Laboratory and office management skills

College credit potential:

Upon successfully completing this program, you may receive up to 6 college credit towards a Laboratory Science Degree at Spokane Community College and up to 4 credits at Wenatchee Valley College. See the instructor for more information.

Academic credits possible:

.5 lab science elective credit per semester.
