WORK-BASED LEARNING PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Work-based Learning:  A competency-based educational experience that integrates classroom instruction with structured work-site experience in which the student receives occupational training that advances student knowledge and skills.

Structured Field Trip

 

(Work-Based)

A career awareness activity with specific objectives that allows students to observe workers on-the-job and the daily activities of a business related to the course. Includes preparation and a reflective activity on the part of the students.

Part of regular class time.

School or program determined.

Job Shadow

 

(Work-Based)

A career awareness activity with specific objectives that allows a student to observe a worker on-the-job and the daily activities of the business. Includes student preparation and post reflective activity.

1 to 8 hours; usually replaces class time

School or program determined.

School-Based Enterprise

(Work-Based)

Activity that involves goods and services being produced by students as part of their educational program and engaging students in the management of a supporting business or simulation.

Part of regular class time.

School or program determined.

Clinical Experience

 

(Worksite)

A paid or non-paid Worksite Learning experience that is an integral component of a state-approved CTE health care training or state-certified nursing training program in which the student obtains job-related experience to develop program competencies, qualification, and/or certification. Accompanied by instructor.

Time for time; commonly replaces in-class time. Parallel with classroom instruction.

Internship

 

(Worksite)

A PAID OR UNPAID worksite learning experience in which the student is a learner/trainee whose activities support the class curriculum, lab instruction and/or attainment of related competencies. Concurrent with in-class learning.

BOTH:  Related to student education/career plans; student receives instruction and experience in a program-related occupational field through written arrangements between the school and employers. The program is planned and supervised by the school and worksite. Learning plans are developed and monitored. All OSPI and legal WBL[1] requirements must be met.

 

            PAID: student is a legal employee, 2 hrs. work per 1 hr class time (360 work hours= 1 semester credit); may replace class time; ongoing communication/monitoring required.

 

            UNPAID: student may NOT replace a regular worker or a paid position; 180 hours per 1.0 credit (time-for-time); may replace class time; ongoing classroom component required.

Acceptable attendance record, demonstrated responsibility, ability to arrange transportation, demonstrated competency in the expected work activities. Approval of the program instructor. Students are responsible for consistently submitting required documentation.

Cooperative Education

 

(Worksite)

A PAID OR UNPAID worksite learning experience in which the student has completed a CTE sequence prior to the Co-op experience or is concurrently enrolled in a CTE class and works in a related occupation.

Acceptable attendance record, minimum of age 16, demonstrated responsibility, ability to arrange transportation, completed related introductory class units. Approval of the program instructor. Students are responsible for consistently submitting required documentation.
