CSI: Clinical & Scientific Investigation/Medical Laboratory Technology

A white-coat career can be yours! With a focus on biomedical technology, this program is your first step toward a medical laboratory career. These professionals are the detectives of the health care world. With microscopes, high-tech instruments and computers, they search for clues that lead to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and leukemia.

Careers in the laboratory field are continually changing as breakthrough scientific and medical knowledge is discovered.

Pre-requisites:

  • Minimum age 16.

  • Ability to pass the school district-approved background check.

  • Documentation that standard immunizations are current.

  • Agreement to complete Hepatitis B immunization sequence OR to sign a waiver release from liability.

  • Ability to provide transportation to off-site learning locations.

Suggested pre-enrollment preparation:

  • Successful completion of school-required math and science courses.

Core Objectives

  • Define the role of the clinical assistant in the healthcare delivery system as it relates to the point-of-care or clinical laboratory environment.

  • Use and apply common medical laboratory terminology and references.

  • Model safety practices

  • Recognize and practice infection control procedures.

  • Recognize and identify blood collection reagents supplies and equipment.

  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to perform phlebotomy.

  • Practice accepted procedures for transporting, accessioning and processing specimens.

  • Recognize and practice special procedures utilized in phlebotomy laboratory practices.

  • Apply supporting mathematics processes.

  • Prepare/reconstitute reagents, standards and controls according to standard operating procedures.

  • Follow established quality control protocols.

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively.

  • Demonstrate legal and ethical responsibilities.

  • Perform laboratory and office management support activities.

  • Demonstrate employability skills.

  • Exhibit leadership characteristics and/or skills.
